"If you relax and make yourself comfortable, you can travel anywhere." Robert Lax
her sweet time
Welcome, come on in and hang out for a while. We are about to go on a bit
of a journey together, a meandering one perhaps, but then in my experience
these are always the best kind… a her sweet time kind of journey!
I spent a couple of summers and one cold winter/spring in the eastern arctic
when I was in university. Now there's a place where time takes on a whole
new meaning. In the summertime the sun never sets. I remember walking out
on the land around 2am, the sun would touch down, graze the horizon line,
then rise right back into the sky. I'd turn myself around and look out across
the tundra, the moon was keeping company, brightly lit over the water.
Walking back to town, at 3am, kids were out playing in the streets. It's hard
for time not to take on a more organic feel in an environment like this.
My friend Leah and I used to go for long walks out on the land. Sometimes Leah's mom would join us; her life
was really busy, but she always had a gentle, unhurried way about her. She also had many stories about when
she lived in camp year round which I loved to hear. One thing I got used to quickly was letting go of clock
watching, any sense that I had to be back to town by a specific time. The day would unfold the way it did,
listening to bird calls, checking out nests, eating whatever wild things we came upon, just being where we
were. To me it felt like giving everything its due, as if these women knew their place in the sacredness of
things and they were helping me to find mine.
